Dust Settles on The Masters
Well, what a Masters! Plenty of talking points ranging from Ernie Els 7 putting his very first hole to Jordan Spieth making 7 on the par 3 12th on Sunday.
After an exciting first 2 days and a superb opening round from Spieth, it was looking like he was well on his way to back-to-back Masters wins. But a fight back on Friday from Rory McIlroy saw them both paired together for what was promising to be an enthralling Saturday. The winning amateur, Dechambeau was providing the story of the day on Friday, as he came storming through the field, before getting himself into trouble from the 18th tee. But a great start from him and looks to have a promising professional career ahead of him, especially his unusual equipment and method. However a 5 over par 77 from Rory McIlroy put pay to his chance of winning that elusive Green Jacket and completing his career grand slam. Instead Saturday seemed to be catch up day for the likes of Langer, who was rolling back the years, Day, Kaufman and even Westwood was not out of it.
Sunday arrived and looked like a solid round from Spieth would be enough to win and all was going to plan at the turn, finishing his front 9 with 4 birdies on a trot for a 5 shot lead over Willett. But then…. A bogie at 10 & 11 and finding the water on 12 was a big shock to the system for everyone watching, as well as Jordan himself. What happened from there was even more of a shock. Not electing to head to the drop zone and play from further back with a yardage they were unsure off, led to a heavy strike and 2 balls in the water, before racking up a 7 and his lead gone in the space in 30 minutes!
But a big congratulations to Danny Willett, the first Englishman to win the masters since Faldo in 1996. His golf was stunning and his composure even better under the pressure. His mind must have been all over the place in the build up, not knowing when his wife was going to give birth to their first child! Maybe being out ahead of Spieth made it easier for his to focus, as he was able to pile the pressure on and hopefully cause Spieth to make a mistake. A plan that worked! I think we were all pleased for him, as he has been knocking on the door for a while now.
TNS is here!
Once The Masters has finished, means one thing. We are not far from the start of the Tuesday Night Stableford. This Tuesday, 19 April sees the first meet of the year. First tee time is 2pm and runs until 5:30pm with an entry fee of £4.
However, for the first few weeks, we suggest starting your round no later than 5pm to guarantee getting round in daylight.
For those who are new to the TNS, see details below:
- 2 ball mandatory, unless otherwise stated by the pro shop - 2pm - last card at 5:30pm - Fixing up not permitted.
This is always the sticking point to TNS. Please put yourself in this position. You are a new member, you don't know anyone, you have been told how wonderful Tuesday nights are and how enjoyable the event is. Only to find out the next four people that come in have all decided to play with each other, leaving you on your own. How is that going to make everyone feel? |
