What Is Happening To The Weather?
I am sure we are all sat here thinking is this really the 1st July? With the temperatures topping out at 18/19 degrees (if we're lucky), combined with rain or thick cloud coverage, it's not filling us with much enthusiasm to spend a long time outside.
You can imagine how frustrating it must be for Nick Nottingham and his team of green keepers! With it being a busy time in the club calendar, his team are working around the clock to not only keep the course in top condition, for now and for the long term, but the battling every time we have significant rainfall to actually keep the course open.
This week alone, the golf club have had to make the difficult decision of abandoning the senior open on Wednesday, at around 3pm. This is a decision that is very much last resort but with the golf course basically flooding in front of your eyes, what else can be done? Furthermore, our ladies had the first round of their Club Championship and Bronze Trophy respectively on Tuesday, before semi finals and finals to be played on Thursday. However, with the golf course being closed Wednesday afternoon, preparations could not be put in to prepare the course for such an event. So, this has now been postponed to Thursday 7th July.
We could now do with a run of dry sunny days to for the course to start to dry out, which seems strange to say in July! The firmness of the golf course is just about the complete opposite to how it was playing this time last year. I can remember Captains' weekend last July, where the greens were bone dry and lightning fast, looking like an Open Championship golf course in the middle of a dry summer. Everywhere is very lush and green this year round, with the ability to stop the ball on the green with some spin.
