Just what golf's been looking for
Having seen the indisputable impact that Twenty20 has had on growing the game of cricket, golf has been looking for its equivalent for a little while now; a shorter, fun and more attractive form of the game which will help drive interest and participation amongst a new generation.
This is where GolfSixes comes in. Entrance music, pyrotechnics, nearest the pin, longest drive, player-fan interaction and a shot clock were all part of the spectacle at the inaugural event last weekend, won by the youthful Denmark team. Yes there were things which will be improved upon moving forward but amid everything, GolfSixes proved that an exciting game of golf can be played over six holes and in under 60 minutes.
It's important to stress that - regardless of whether you enjoyed the weekend's play or not - GolfSixes is not designed to replace traditional golf as we know it, but to simply serve as a pathway to get more people playing the game we love.
Let us know what you made of it here.
Macmillan Longest Day
On the 21st June, Sam and three of his friends (Neil Toothill, Nick Vance and Paul Tomson) have accepted the Macmillan challenge of playing 72 holes of golf in one day. They have chosen to play four different 18-hole courses in Rutland, Luffenham Heath, Rutland Water and both of Greetham Valley's courses. This will involve over 20 miles of walking over a likely 15-16 hours of play and somewhere in the region of 300 shots.
The four of them who have signed up know at least one person close to them who has survived or succumb to cancer in the recent years. Macmillan have supported these people and their families through the most difficult times of their lives and the boys would like to show their appreciation.
Sam would really appreciate anyone sponsoring them for their challenge, we know it's not a sky dive, or a marathon but it will still be a huge challenge! Please click here to give a donation to the charity. No matter how large or small, all donations are appreciated.
Sam thanks you in advance and is excited but nervous about the prospect.
