Luffenhams day in the limelight
Well…. How did it go? I hear you ask. The course preparation started a year ago. The organisation of the day started a day after the first one last year. Many of the staff had been working towards Monday's Open Championship qualifier for months and months and months. Tim, the club manager, clocked 96 hours last week. Nick the head green keeper, also clocked an impressive 96 hours. Cassie, in the kitchen started at 5am and was still there at 7pm. Tom in the shop had to start at 6am and was still there at 7pm.
So, how did I get on? Was it easier or harder than last year? It was less windy and more bouncy, which probably means it was about the same. I teed off the first at 1:07 with a 3 wood trying not to be too chicken and leaving myself too far away from the green. Having learned to breath again over the golf ball, from nerves, I hit my 3 wood straight down the middle, which with the slope, finished in the first cut on the right hand side. That left me 119 yards to the flag. I hit a SW 100 yards and let the bounce do the rest. The result was my ball being inside 12 inches from the hole, which I got. Birdie. That was the highlight of my round. I shot 74 and missed by 4. In truth, I didn't hit it that good and had to relied on short game. If you are a golf pro and you only hit four greens in regulation, you are not going to get through. Last year, I was petrified the whole way around the course. This year, I was nervous on the first tee, nervous on the second shot and calm for the rest of it. I hit a few good shots, lots of OK shots and a couple of bad ones. I really enjoyed the weather, the two amateurs that I played with and seeing so many people supporting Sam and me out on the golf course. I hope you all enjoyed your day, watching good golfers play your course.
From a player's perspective, and also someone who works at this club, in no particular order - I want to thank all of the volunteers, the R&A, Tim and the office, Nick and the green keepers, Tom in the shop and Cassie and Michael in the Kitchen. What a great day! Only 363 days until the next one.
