Gents Captain/Pro Matches
The list for this years gents captain/pro matches are now on the board in the gents changing room. For those who have not played in one of these matches before, it is a lot of fun and an enjoyable Thursday or Saturday afternoon on the golf course. The Gents captain and myself are very much looking forward to challenging you this year.
The format is 3ball sixsomes, half combined handicap with the choice of tees at the discretion of the challengers. All matches start at 1pm. The fee to play is £10 per member, payable in the pro shop.
This year, the Gents captain has decided to make Gents Captains Finals a 4BBB competition, and all competitors are eligible to play whether you win, lose or draw. The Gents Captains finals are played on Sunday 19th October 2014.
Rules
As we head out of the winter and into the summer our attention should be concentrating on scoring. The course has wintered better than ever helped by some mild weather. The course will soon have all the bunkers and tees in play to make the course qualifying. Everybody will be a bit rusty on marking a card so I thought I would give you all a few pointers on how keep your card legal.
The Rules of Golf state that. It’s the players responsibility to ensure their card is correct, not the marker.
- a. Recording Scores After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker must sign the score card and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each must sign for the part for which he is responsible.
- b. Signing and Returning Score Card After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-6b:
Handicap Before starting a match in a handicap competition, the players should determine from one another their respective handicaps. If a player begins a match having declared a handicap higher than that to which he is entitled and this affects the number of strokes given or received, he is disqualified; otherwise, the player must play off the declared handicap.
- b. Stroke Play In any round of a handicap competition, the competitor must ensure that his handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned to the Committee. If no handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned (Rule 6-6b), or if the recorded handicap is higher than that to which he is entitled and this affects the number of strokes received, he is disqualified from the handicap competition; otherwise, the score stands.
Note: It is the player’s responsibility to know the holes at which handicap strokes are to be given or received.
Flicking through the rule book you will come across “the committee” for Luffenham Heath the shop and the office are the committee. We do not want to disqualify somebody but we do follow the rules.
Team Events
Playing in a betterball competition there will be player A and player B or in an AmAm format you will have players A,B,C and D. Make sure the scores go in the correct box. We can only check what is in front of us, most of the time we know what your mistake is but we can only check the scorecard that is put in front of us.
Bogey/Par
This one confused nearly everybody. The easy way to remember this is you are playing match play against the course. A Par is a ‘-‘ or ‘0’ , a nett birdie or better is a ‘win’ or ‘+’, and a nett bogey or worse is a ‘loss’ or ‘minus‘. Just remember we can only check the scorecard that you give us. If you do not record the gross score we can check your nett score. In this format a minus does not require the gross score as you have lost the hole against the course. A half or a win MUST have the gross score recorded.

Tuesday Night Stableford Times Change.
Please be aware that the 1st tee times available for Tuesday Night Stablefords this year has changes to 2.30. This is to allow those who wish to roll up a greater time to tee off. Now Tuesday night stablefords are under way, I would just like to remind all players of the realistic latest tee time for this month. Although the clocks have now gone forward, dusk is setting in around 8pm. Therefore, I suggest that the latest time to tee off would be around 4:30 – 5pm to guarantee yourself getting round comfortably. As the weeks go on, this will obviously be no problem when it doesn’t get dark until 9 – 9:30. If you are unsure as to whether you will get a game at that time, give us a call in the shop and we can let you know if anyone is waiting or looking for a game.
For those newer members it’s a fantastic way to meet other members, make new friends and get your handicap down.
There are one or two courtesies for Tuesday Nights which we in the shop need all players to adopt. TNS runs from 2.30 - 5.30 every Tuesday.
2 ball play is mandatory. To avoid the jamming effect on then course we will again ask you to tee off only when the group in front is on the second tee. This was tried over the last couple of years and met with universal approval.
Please enter the shop, pay your entrance fee (£4) and wait to be paired up by one of the shop staff. This means that no golfer is ever left waiting for too long. It only ever takes one pre arranged game to potentially leave one person without a game and feeling unloved.
Whilst playing keep moving, if you hit a ball into difficulty look for it yourself don’t except the other player to help you. Let quicker players through. Try your hardest to play 18 in around 3 hours. Then the best bit – have a beer in the clubhouse and something to eat.
