Junior Evening Success 

As you may have been aware, The Pro Shop has been asked to run the junior section this year for the first time. Inevitably, we are still very much on a learning curve with the organisation and communication with our junior section. Seeing our junior section on a regular basis and having built a rapport with them over a number years, the golf club felt we would be best to take charge. 

A major priority this year was promoting all three of the junior competitions and also the heath cup, which is a knockout competition amongst the juniors. We have tried to get as many playing in these as we can, to give them all a chance to get to know each other and not alienate them into just school groups.

Another challenge we face is organising enough juniors to participate in the annual meetings against Woodhall Spa. Many of our juniors are affiliated with Oakham, Stamford & Uppingham schools, for which a large proportion are boarders and go home during the school holidays, which is inevitable when these matches are played. However, in the October meet at Luffenham we had a great turn out from both teams and the day was a huge success, with us defeating Woodhall in the match.

Furthermore, the Centenary Captains Trophy played in July was another fantastic day for all involved and was great to see some of our juniors playing that have not participated in any of the junior matches before. A nice meal after the game was a nice way to finish the day, which was enjoyed by all that took part. Unfortunately, it also meant the trophy was retained by the club having been a tie on the day!

As a massive thank you to our junior section, we held our very own version of the men's dinner in the clubhouse. This was held Friday, 20 November and consisted of burger and chips, a general knowledge quiz and a competition of putting and chipping games, as well as the handing of out of the season's trophy winners. We had 13 juniors able to ettend on the night, who joined myself, Tom, Sam & Keven Johnstone. It was a great success and the juniors all seemed to have fun and enjoy the occasion.

It was also the time to announce the winner of the Donald Jack Memorial Trophy, which is handed to out to the junior of the year. This is awarded to the junior that has not only had a good playing season, but also who has made a positive contribution to the junior section and the golf club as well as the correct attitude and behavior when at the golf club. This was handed to Charles Petrie, who you would have heard a lot about this year having managed to drop his handicap from 5.1 to 0.5 this playing season!

He also won the club championship at Seacroft and cam runner up to Gary Firkins the following day in Luffenham's version of the club championships. Charles has displayed a fantastic attitude this year, participating in as many events as he can with the club and juniors as well as manage his school work and nationwide competitions all at the same time. So, a massive well done to Charles!
